Whole Nutmeg, An Essential

Whole nutmeg is such a versatile spice to have in your pantry.  It can be used in sweet or savory dishes.  I always have ground nutmeg on hand for emergencies, but once you use whole there really is no substitute.  It has a warm flavor and is strongly aromatic.  It is both slightly spicy and sweet all at the same time.  It is one of those spices that I always reach for to add that little bit of flare to my dishes.  From cakes, to puddings, to cookies, and both apple and pumpkin pie, nutmeg is essential.  It adds a wonderful flavor to a bechamel sauce,  to soups, and stews, pasta, squash, and a potato gratin.  Eggnog wouldn’t be eggnog without nutmeg!  The healing benefits of nutmeg are always being researched. Thought to relieve pain, soothe indigestion, detoxify the body, strengthen cognitive function, and my favorite, reduce insomnia, nutmeg is just an all around wonderful spice! Before bed try a cup of warm milk with nutmeg and cinnamon and see how beautifully you sleep.
